Why convert VTT to SRT?

WebVTT is the web's caption format, so captions downloaded from YouTube, online courses or streaming rips often arrive as .vtt. Outside the browser, though, SRT is still the lingua franca: desktop players like VLC and MPC, media servers like Plex and Jellyfin, and most smart TVs and set-top boxes either prefer SRT or refuse VTT entirely. If your player shows no subtitles, garbled text or the raw file contents, converting to SRT almost always fixes it.

What gets cleaned up on the way

SRT is stricter and simpler than VTT, so the converter does a little tidying: the WEBVTT header, NOTE and STYLE blocks disappear, timestamp periods become commas, cues are renumbered sequentially, and web-only cue settings (position, alignment) are dropped. The text and timing of every caption are preserved exactly.

After converting

Name the .srt the same as your video file (Movie.2024.mkv → Movie.2024.srt), keep both in the same folder, and players pick it up automatically.
