When you actually need SBV

Honestly: YouTube accepts .srt uploads directly, so most of the time you don't need this conversion. You need SBV when a workflow or tool specifically asks for it — some caption-editing utilities, archival pipelines and older integrations built around YouTube's native format only accept .sbv.

What changes in the file

SBV drops the cue numbers, puts the start and end time on one comma-separated line (0:00:01.000,0:00:03.500) with a period before the milliseconds, and the caption text follows on the next lines. Timing is preserved to the millisecond and multi-line captions are kept.

In YouTube Studio, open Subtitles, choose the video and language, then Add → Upload file. Both SRT and SBV work. If your captions need timing fixes before upload, do it in the subtitle editor or with the sync tool first — YouTube's own editor is much slower for bulk fixes.
